[Global Insight] Key Insights from Global Leading CCUS Markets — Natural Resources Canada
Description:
At the Japan CCUS Summit 2025, Ms. Cynthia Handler, Director General of the Office of Energy Research and Development at Natural Resources Canada, delivered a virtual address titled “Key Insights from Canada’s Carbon Management Strategy.”
The presentation highlighted Canada’s leadership in carbon management, encompassing both CCUS and carbon dioxide removal, and outlined the country’s strategy to advance innovation, economic growth, and international collaboration in the sector. Key points included Canada’s carbon management framework, federal and provincial regulations for safe CO₂ storage, industrial carbon pricing, and investment tax credits to support project development and scale-up.
Handler also detailed major federal initiatives, including the One Canadian Economy Act and the Building Canada Act, which aim to streamline major infrastructure projects. CCUS technologies have been identified as a strategic focus, supported through public-private partnerships, targeted R&D programs, and financial instruments such as the Canada Growth Fund and carbon contracts for differences.
She emphasized Canada’s strong industrial base, favorable geology for CO₂ storage, and growing portfolio of commercial-scale CCUS projects. Recent final investment decisions, innovative technology deployments, and bilateral and multilateral collaborations—including partnerships with Japan and participation in international forums such as the Carbon Management Challenge, the Clean Energy Ministerial CCUS Initiative, and the Mission Innovation Carbon Dioxide Removal Mission—demonstrate the country’s global engagement.
